Efficiency

So by now, you've probably heard me make some rumblings about https://www.facebook.com/efficiencyfilm" target="_blank">Efficiency across the expanses of the internet.  So now, I'm going to take this opportunity to tell you all a little bit more about it.

If you've seen the tagline before, then you'll recognize it when I say Efficiency is about two irresponsible twin brothers who struggle to keep their close bond intact when one of them faces the trauma of losing his children.  We open on two identical twins, Derrick and Patrick (played by yours truly) playing Mario Kart against one another.  And if you've ever played Mario Kart Wii at 150 cc with hard computers for a stretch of time, you'll know that these two are pretty heated.  Lots of japeries slung at one another, and screaming about bullets, red shells, and all other kinds of chaotic weapons of mass destruction.  This display illustrates the better part of their lives over the last several months as they skirt by without paying rent on time and coast through their post college years while remaining unemployed.

Derrick is the slightly more responsible of the two twins while Patrick does far less with his time (outside enjoying the company of women).

Derrick is in a very serious relationship with a young woman named Christine (played by Beth Moline).  When he accidentally impregnates her, the young couple must deal with the hardships of this unexpected responsibility that looms over them.

This story is inspired by a deeply personal event that took place in my family.  It led to some very difficult times.  We all dealt with it differently and I, as with many things, chose to deal with it in the only way I knew how; through art.

The first time I tried to write it was as a Freshman in college in 2007.  I soon realized it wasn't working very well and was far too literal anyway.  After sitting on it for awhile, it dawned on me that I hadn't put enough of myself into it the first time, so in 2009, I tried again but still to no avail.  It was much closer but, as a play taking place entirely within the efficiency apartment, the story was just too long for it to be linear.  Since this is so grounded in reality, I didn't want to do anything abstract with it and didn't want to stray from keeping it linear.  So I sat on the idea even longer.  Then, last year, I brought a scene from the script into the acting class I was taking and performed it there to guage peoples' reactions to it.  It went over very well with everybody and the acting coach, Choice Skinner (who is a great coach by the way), encouraged me to write it as a feature film.  So by January of 2011, I had the first draft completed.  I owe many thanks to Choice for getting me moving on it, and getting me into a place to where I believed it was possible.

I approached Kate Enge, who was a fellow student back at the college I attended, and she expressed great interest in directing the film.  We had worked together on a number of short films she'd directed as part of her series called {the moment after}.  We've been working diligently to get this film going ever since.

At this point, the story, while still inspired by the original hardships on my family, is very much its own.  I believe it's something everyone can relate to, as it deals with youth, love, loss, and growing up, entering the scary "real world," while not being ready or fully prepared to do so.  I want this to be an "experience" film where you feel what the characters are feeling as they feel it.  That, to me, is very much a part of what life is; living moment to moment.

There is a lot of "me" in the characters of Derrick and Patrick.  I've always believed that the best way to know me is through my work, because I share the truest, and most intimate parts of myself in what I do.  That's part of what I love about my job.

We're going to be launching an IndieGogo campaign for Efficiency tomorrow.  We're aiming to raise $10,000 dollars, which is a lot of money.  I'm really hoping we can raise it all because it would be a serious advantage in insuring we do it well.  We've got a great team put together to make it all happen, we just need that extra kick that money would give us.

Thanks a lot for reading.  I'll be back tomorrow with all kinds of posts about the IndieGogo campaign.  In the meantime, check out the Efficiency Facebook https://www.facebook.com/efficiencyfilm" target="_blank">page  and https://twitter.com/#!/EfficiencyFilm" target="_blank">Twitter profiles.  The website is coming soon but I'll let you know when it's live.  We're going to be offering lots of free content as we go along throughout the campaign.  I'll see you guys tomorrow.  Thanks again, and have a great day!
